It was time for lunch and I was meeting one of my favorite people in the world, my sister Rita. We both decided to meet at Gusto located in Seaside California. We have been hearing that the dining and food experience has been elevated to another level. In fact, Gusto was just voted “Best New Restaurant” by the Monterey County Weekly. Checking over the menu we chose to order three dishes and split to taste. First course was the daily soup special-The Mushroom Soup. It was made with a variety of wild mushrooms, pureed very smooth with a drizzle of truffle oil. Our server added fresh ground black pepper which completed this soups complex and rich flavor. Then for our second course the Short Rib Ravioli, the sauce was similar in flavor like the soup, although only using porchini mushrooms and marscarpone. The ravioli’s sat in the right amount of sauce. It tasted a bit sweeter which made the perfect compliment to the meaty rich short rib ravioli’s. The last course is one of my favorite pizza’s “The Napoletana”. It is made with San Marzano Tomatoes, White Anchovies, Garlic, Capers, Olives, Red Onions, Chili Flakes and Oregano, no cheese on this pizza. Unbelievable and surprisingly these ingredients seem as if it would be over kill in the flavor department. Quite the contrary these ingredients are the perfect balance of spicy, savory and sweet. Baked in the wood burning oven. The pizza had a delicious slight flavor of the wood char on the bottom of the crust. It’s a party in your mouth!
