Summer’s finally here and grills across the country are heating up, fireworks are starting to light up the sky and the danger of fires is at an all time high (especially in drought-stricken California). Because of this very real threat, I visited some of Monterey County's firehouses to learn helpful tips on fire safety from the men who have deal with the dangers of fire every day.
So without further delay, I give you six fire safety tips to practice this Summer:
1. Chualar Fire Engineer Jeff May:
“During the Summer months and outdoor events, please keep fire pits covered with screens to keep embers from escaping.”
2. Chualar Fire Captain & Paramedic Dale Williams:
“Be sure hot ashes are completely cold (fireplace or barbecue coals) before disposal. Dispose in a tin can, but never into a garbage can!
3. Chualar Firefighter & Paramedic Scott Babione:
“Petroleum-based clothing such as lycra or nylon, which are commonly found in swimsuits and workout apparel burn like gasoline and stick to the wearer. Keep kids with swimwear, such as rash guards well away from campfires. Opt for a wool or cotton outer layer when roasting marshmallows, for example.”
4. Monterey Fire Captain John Caniglia:
“All drivers, please move to the right of the road for any emergency vehicle using its siren and lights. Thank you!”
5. Monterey Firefighter Steve Pearson:
“Be sure your address number is clearly visible to responding fire/rescue workers.”
6. Monterey Fire Engineer Brian Wilkins:
“Don't light fireworks on or near dry grass.”
